| I NEED MORE TIME ON MONDAYS By Vivette Ashen-Brenner Sept. 18, 2000 I need more time on Mondays, I really really do. I need more time on Mondays, I’m stressed and feeling blue I’ve done the books and written checks, packed boxes, ordered shoes, gone to the bank, post office, stores, I think I’ve paid my dues! I need more time on Mondays to cook meals so nutritious. I’m lucky that my family thinks “Helper” is delicious! I’m not prepared for today, I’ve nothing ready to teach, I’m using others notes and steps, does this make me a leech? I need more time on Mondays, I’ve faxed and faxed and faxed, but I’d really like to mop the floor, put on a coat of wax. Sunday’s such a long long day. It drags from morn till night. If Monday took an hour, do you think it’d be alright? I need more time on Mondays I really, really do. I need more time on Mondays ..... Don’t you? |
| Dancing Teacher by Vivette Ashen-Brenner Dancing teacher works all night teaching, talking, “left and right Chaine turn and one two three point the toe and stretch the knee.” “Shuffle hop step. Step ball change Watch those arms, they’re looking strange” Jazz and tap, Pointe and ballet “Clap your hands and shout “Hooray!”” Preschool hugs, and runny noses Crayon drawings, “Lovely roses!” Magic Wands and pink tutu’s “Sarah, where’s your other shoe?” Costume choices, music too “We’d love to do a show for you.” Pick a date and rent the hall Plan for spring back in the fall. Missing dancers Friday night “Can’t come to class, the game’s tonight!” “She missed a class when she was ill So do I have to pay this bill?” “Can we do splits? I’ve got tryouts” This from the girl who usually shouts “It hurts my leg to stretch that far, do we have to do the barre?” “I forgot my tights!” “I forgot my skirt!” “I don’t have a leo under my shirt!” “My friends wear boxers at their school, the dress codes such a stupid rule.” Dancing teacher works all night turn down the heat, turn off the light pick up the bag of costume books find time tonight to take a look. No one cried or piddled today One mother even stopped to say “Wanted to say thanks for all you do, Emma loves dance, and she really loves you.” Dancing teacher dreams all night dreaming dreams - recital fright Programs, tickets, sets to do “Teacher can you tie my shoe?” Costume order won’t come in “What do we have we can wear again?” UPS overnight express “Oh thank heavens, the lyrical dress.” Is it worth it? All this stress? A rent to pay at each address? Bills pile up in the folder each year I’m feeling a little older 24 years of teaching dance Was it by choice or by chance? Did some one up there have a plan? So I could teach a great “can-can”? Starting as a firefly I knew one day I’d have to try Dancing teacher knows in her heart This is her life, her love, her art. |
